CPAP Masks

What Is The Use Of CPAP Masks?

The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is used in treating obstructive sleep apnea. This is a sleep disorder where the soft tissues at the back of your throat collapse when you are asleep. This causes a blockage to your airway and you have to wake up in order to breathe. The blockage can happen up to thirty times in an hour which greatly affects the quality of your sleep.

The CPAP therapy makes use of a machine which blows pressurized air down your throat to keep your airway open. You can therefore breathe without any interference. CPAP masks are worn over your nose or mouth to enable you to breathe in the pressurized air.

Can A CPAP Mask Cause Eye Problems?

The CPAP mask that you use should fit properly and you should adjust the cushions and straps until you get a good fit. A nasal mask is worn over the nose and you should not breathe through your mouth when using this mask. You can use a chin strap to keep your mouth shut when using the nasal mask so that your therapy is not affected.

You should make sure that you fit the nasal mask lower on the bridge of the nose. If it is fitted higher up on the nose, the pressurized air may leak and find its way to your eyes. This will cause your eyes to become dry and irritated and they may also become teary.

Selecting A Suitable Mask

There are a wide range of CPAP masks available and you can try out as many as possible so that you can get a good fit. If you normally sleep with your mouth open at night, a full face mask may be suitable since it allows you to breathe through your nose and mouth. You can also use the full face mask if your doctor has prescribed a high pressure for your therapy.

If you toss a lot in your sleep, then a nasal mask which covers the nose only may be a good option. You can also use the nasal mask if you are claustrophobic, that is, you get anxious whenever you feel enclosed. If you normally sleep on your stomach or your side, then the nasal pillow may work for you. It consists of two pillows which are fitted at the edge of the nostrils. This mask does not obstruct your view and you can watch television or read a book before you sleep.

Are CPAP Masks Comfortable?

Since CPAP masks are available in a range of styles and sizes, you should take your time in selecting one that will work best for you. Your doctor will normally indicate in the prescription that you can use the mask of your choice. Even after you have identified a well fitting mask that is comfortable, you may still have a problem getting used to having it on when you go to bed.

Try as much as possible to wear the mask during the day so that your face can get accustomed to it. Once you get accustomed to your mask you will find that you are able to fall asleep without any problem. You should also replace your cushion and head strap once they wear out.
